Design commission: Constellation data display

Greg More of OOM Creative and Pete Brundle and James Sandri of Studio PDA will collaborate to design a large-scale, dynamic data-driven display within our new free permanent exhibition.

As part of our major $40 million renewal project, we are commissioning a series of contemporary art and design works that reflect our commitment to experimentation, innovation and creativity and our interest in new forms and media.

The new exhibition will feature the Constellation: a social, interactive experience that allows visitors to explore unexpected connections between films, TV episodes, videogames and artworks. The data commission is a non-interactive large scale projection that accompanies the Constellation.

Proposed work

OOM Creative and Studio PDA will use state-of-the-art data visualisation techniques to fill the projected canvas with a dynamic digital mapping of the whole corpus of works, connecting directly to the ACMI XOS, and use data gleaned from visitor interactions to animate, transform and give life to the visualisation.

The large scale of the projection will enable a new series of micro-narratives to emerge as a backdrop to the visitor’s engagement with the Constellation’s interactive tables. The display will provide a moment of reflection near the end of the exhibition; visitors will see how their interactions with the XOS transform the data visualisation, ultimately making a living map of the ACMI collection and allowing them to see their interactions as part of a bigger picture.
